The Elbertse/Adema organ
from
the Laurentius & Elisabeth Kathedraal in Rotterdam
€ 459,-
December 2017 we have recorded for Hauptwerk the main organ of the
Laurentius & Elisabeth Cathedral situated Mathenesserlaan 305 in
Rotterdam.
The organbuilder Elbertse of Aalten built a pneumatic organ with 30
stops on two manuals an pedal in 1923. The pipe facade was designed by
the church's archtect P.G. Buskens.
An extensive transformation took place in 1997/98, executed by the
organbuilders Adema Schreurs from Amsterdam with help from many parish
volunteers.
The disposition of the Swell (now third manual) was reconstructed and
a french Fagot 16' and Trompet harmonique 8' were added. The existing
Hobo 8' was replaced by a french Hobo.
The pedal Open Fluit 4' was replaced by a Trombone made from
pine-wood. The Bazuin 16' was extended with a subcontra-octave to
provide the transmission of a Bazuin 32'. The largest 12 pipes of this
stop are also made of pine-wood.
More extensive was the addition of the Positive (now second manual).
Tree stops are completely new: the Klarinet, Engelse Hoorn and Viola
4'. All other pipework comes from the organbuilders stock. The
preumatic system was electrified and the console completely rebuild.
Originally placed on the left-hand side of the balcony, the console
was moved to its present location, almost in front of the organ, in
May 2003.
About the recordings
Three channels technology
This sample set was recorded from three positions in stereo (24 bit
96kHz).
The set comes with a Sygsoft devised 3-channel technique whereby the
user may set the listening position themselves.
There are 3 positions, namely :
1: Front, recorded very close to the organ. This provides a very
direct recording that is useful for study purposes.
2: Centre (Middle), this recording was made at about 3 times the
distance used in the front recording.
3: Rear, recorded far from the organ is used as surround.
Through three sliders (0-100%), a mix can be made of the three
positions that is to your liking.
The 4th slider (with the caption "II") is the swellpedal of manual II.
The 5th slider (with the caption "III") is de swellpedal of the Swell
(man. III).
Other details

Important : Before download, first read the comments below at
'General'.
General
Installing a sampleset
Important: Download the latest licensing packages file
https://www.hauptwerk.com/licensingpackages/
Start Hauptwerk V (or higher) and install this file via the menu File
| Install Organ, Temperament, or Impulse Response Reverb... Hauptwerk
will 'learn' which protected sets are currently on the market.
For users of Hauptwerk 5 or higher:
1. Make sure that Hauptwerk is not loaded.
2. Open your iLok account and choose 'Licenses/Redeem Activation code',
cut and paste the many-digit code into the screen.
3. Activate your license to 'iLok Cloud' or to the 'iLok dongle'.
Insert the dongle into the Hauptwerk PC (if it is not already connected to it).
Detailed explanation point 3: (It turns out this is not clear to everyone)
3a: Go to your iLok account (log in if necessary),
select the sampleset for which you want to enter the activation code.
3b: At the top right of the iLok screen is a gray/green check
mark.
If you go over this with the mouse you will see the text
'Activate licenses'.
Click on this check mark and you will see a new screen.
3c: Click on 'Activate' and 'Ok'. Now the checkmark in the previous
screen turns green.
3d: Now double-click on the sampleset you bought,
the screen that opens must show "License status active" on the top
line.
3e: If necessary, repeat the above for the eventualy other newly
purchased organs.
4. Restart Hauptwerk and you can install and use the organ.
Before download and install, note the following:
1. Download all .CompPkg.Hauptwerk files.
2. Leave these files in the same folder and
3. Do not change the file names and
4. Do not unpack by hand.
5. Check the MD5 checksums with the WinMD5 program, free to download
from
http://www.winmd5.com
or http://www.fastsum.com If a checksum is incorrect, discard the wrong download file
from the PC and download that file again.
6. Start Hauptwerk (File/Install organ....), select in the folder where
you just downloaded the files,
the file with extension .CompPkg_Hauptwerk_rar in Hauptwerk's 'component installer'.
Hauptwerk automatically finds the other files.
7. If you get error messages, scroll to the end of the log file (this
opens automatically if something goes wrong when unpacking) to see
what goes wrong.
Usually a file is missing, or there is a file in the wrong folder or
a file is damaged.
8. Before loading the sampleset, check the
system information
regarding the expected memory usage etc.
Note: Please contact us via the
Contact form if you encounter any
issues; we will try to assist you.
System requirements
of the Elbertse/Adema organ from the Laurentius & Elisabeth
Kathedraal in Rotterdam
a modern fast computer, minimum 32 GB RAM and e.g. Windows 10 64 bit
a good internal or external sound card
2 manuals/keyboards with (at least 25 keys) pedal òr a complete
electronic organ with MIDI out
good quality speakers /headphone
The computer
To play the complete version of this sample set without restrictions
requires a modern, fast computer with, for example, Windows 10 64 bit
installed and around 32 GB of RAM.
Obviously Hauptwerk must also be installed with the latest version 5
(or higher) Advanced.
It is said that the best results are achieved using Apple-MacIntosh
computers; however, we have no experience with this. It is difficult
to make exact statements about what is needed. The "mother" website
hauptwerk.com
provides much information about this issue.
Prerequisites .
Please note: This information applies to the newest version of
Hauptwerk.
This virtual Elbertse/Adema Laurentius organ can be downloaded. The
set is protected with the Hauptwerk Protection System via the
iLok account or dongle from your
Hauptwerk program.
Below is a table of memory usage .
On other systems, these values can vary considerably!
Please note that your Operating System also requires considerable
memory.
The sound card
A good internal or external sound card. For more information go to:

Manuals/keyboards/pedal òr complete organ with MIDI out
2 manuals/keyboards and a (at least 25 keys) pedal òr a complete
electronic organ with MIDI out. Beautiful consoles specifically
designed for Hauptwerk are commercially available.
In the Netherlands these are available through, for example,
Those who are technically inclined can provide their keyboard with
MIDI capability using hardware from, for example,
WIRA,
MIDI-Hardware.com
or MGB . We ourselves have
done this using a Heyligers organ dating from around 1975 (using WIRA
hardware). The conversion was about 300 Euro and everything has worked
perfectly for years.
Speakers/headphone
The superb sound quality of Hauptwerk is best experienced through
high-quality headphones, such as AKG or Sennheiser.
We prefer connecting the sound card to a (possibly multi-channel)
sound system. The above mentioned companies can also advise you on any
purchases in this area.
What you definitely should not do is listen to Hauptwerk
through the built-in speakers of the monitor or a set of €10 computer
speakers!
Table of memory usage
for
the Elbertse/Adema organ from the Laurentius & Elisabeth
Kathedraal in Rotterdam
Hauptwerk 6 (space needed on the hard drive is ca. 10 GB)
The meaning of the columns: A = Number of loaded channels B =
Compression applied? C = Bit rate Pipe samples D = Multi-release pipe
loaded? E = Organ cache (GB) F = RAM usage, Operating System not
included (GB)
Please note that the stated values are an approximation !
De nrs. 1-2-3: is for loading mode 16 bit, single release compressed
(a possibility but we think the quality is insufficient). De nrs.
4-5-6: is for loading mode 16-bit, compressed and multi release (the
standard Hauptwerk loading mode). De nrs. 7-8-9: is for loading mode
16 bit, uncompressed and multi release. De nrs. 10-11-12: is for
loading mode 20-bit, compressed and multi release. De nrs. 13-14-15:
is the loading mode 20 bit, multi release uncompressed (we prefer this
if you have enough memory). There are of course many more variants,
e.g. pipe samples loaded at 24 bit and sounds at 16 bit, etc. If
you're having trouble, send us your question by filling in the

Screen layout of
the Elbertse/Adema organ from the Laurentius & Elisabeth Kathedraal
in Rotterdam
Tab 1 : Foto's (Pictures)
On this tab the front of the organ, if you click on the picture, you
can see the church.
Tab 2 : Registers (Stops)
On this tab, we see a simpler representation of the stops more
suitable for users of touch screens.
All stops and playing aids specifically made for Hauptwerk are
underlined here.
The stops of manual II have pipes up to g''''. Using the 'S' buttons
the stop sounds one octave up.
The button "MOTOR" switched the wind engine.
The button "TREMULANT MANUAAL I": Manual I has no tremulant on
the real organ but for the enthusiast we have added one.
The sliders "Voor" (Front), "Midden" (Middle) and "Achter" (Rear)
allows you to set the ratio of the various channels thereby
determining your listening position.
If you prefer a direct sound, select a high value for "Voor" and low
values for "Midden" and "Achter".
If you prefer an indirect sound, then you should adjust "Midden" and
"Achter" to higher values.
The 4th slider (with the caption "II" is the swell pedal from manual
II, 5th slider is the swell pedal from manual III. All these sliders
can be used if desired to be connected to a swell pedal. Moving the
mouse verticaly over the digital crescendo pointer changes the
position of the Crescendo.
This pointer can also connected to a swell pedal. .
Tab 3 : Schakelaars (Switches)
Most elements of this page need not actually be visible but are still
of interest if only to give a bit of an idea of what needs to be done
to get a sample set of this magnitude working. Just remember that
behind every (manual) stop control there are 56 long, 56 long release,
56 medium release, and 56 short-release samples. In addition there are
also 56 tremulant and 56 tremulant release samples for the Hoofdwerk.
The same applies to the pedal with 30 samples (here without
tremulant). In total approximately 38.000 samples.
Furthermore, it is useful to know that if you right-click on a switch,
you will be immediately directed to the appropriate voicing screen.
In the middle above you will find 4 buttons "Cresc man I", "Cresc man
II", "Cresc man III", "Cresc man Ped". With these buttons you can
determine whether the General Crescendo works on these manuals or not.
Tab 4 : Speeltafel (Virtual Console)
This screen is only used to connect the various manuals with your
console. Right-click on the manual to be connected.
Tab 5 : Windmodel (Wind)
This tab shows a schematic representation of the wind supply for this
organ.
With the various sliders you can control the flow of wind for the
bellows and the various chests.
The "R" or reset buttons, allow you to return to the settings that, in
our view, yield the best results. With the button "Sygsoft," below on
the right, you can reset all six sliders at once.
Important:
Should you decide not to load a portion of this sample set (e.g. your
computer RAM is too small and you choose to omit all "Rear" samples)
then the wind consumption is reduced by 33% and the organ becomes much
less sensitive to the wind than it actually is.
In this case, go to Organ settings / Organ preferences / Wind supply
model and choose a value of around 150%. Should you load only one
position, e.g. "Middle," (thereby reducing the wind consumption by
66%) then you must set this value to about 300% to obtain the same
result.
Obviously you can select any value you wish if the organ's behaviour
is not to your liking.
If the Wind Supply Model-tab is left unchecked, you can completely
disable its function.
Tab 6 : Crescendo (General crescendo screen)
On this tab a schematic representation of the crescendo pedal.
Here you can create your own taste and make one or more schemes and
save them via Registration / Save combination set as ... or Re-save
current combination set.
With the button "Reset to default" you switch on the schedule
scheme that Christian Boogaard has developed.
You can also start from this Default scheme and this change and
save.
By clicking the mouse button on the right and moving the cursor
vertically you can move the Crescendo cursor.
Each register button that works on the general crescendo has an LED
next to or above the button on the 3 registration screens. So you have
control at any time during playing which stops are enabled/disabled
via the general crescendo.
Tab 7 : Overig (About)
On this tab you can indicate which registers should be switched on
with the "Tutti" button. You can change and save this schedule.
With the button "R" you return to the default setting.
Under "Crescendo werkt op:" you will find 4 buttons
"Cresc man I", "Cresc man II" , "Cresc man III" , "Cresc man Ped" . With these buttons you can determine whether General Crescendo
works on these manuals or not.
Under "Tongwerk uit" type, you will find two buttons
"NEDERLANDS" and "CAVAILLÉ-COLL" . If you choose for
Nederlands (Dutch), then on the tabs "Registers" and "Rechts" the
yellow LED burns next to the button Tongwerk uit and if you
choose Cavaillé-Coll then burns the red LED. The reeds are switched
off according to the following scheme:
